Education

Every time someone mentions education, especially a politician, these days, the first and most only words that fall out of their mouths is about money. It appears that neither our school districts, nor any of our elected officials cares a single iota about what OUR children should be learning. All they speak about is how we need to strive to be average, about how Nevada needs to spend the national average per pupil – which would cause virtually half of us to file for bankruptcy. All this despite the knowledge that the school district that spends the most per pupil in the United States is last in education.

Let no one be confused about what our goal is: Guaranteeing every Nevadan a quality education!

There is only one candidate whose primary concern is about what our children are taught. We can document our statements by referring to Senate Bill 165 of the 2001 Legislative Session. Those who only care about increasing spending for “education” attempted to delete the teaching of American History and American Government in our public schools. We defeated these legislators & supporters of only increasing spending (my opponent is one) and mandated for the first time the teaching of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. The entire State Board of Education and the leadership of the teachers’ union opposed us, but those of us who believe in this country were victorious.

Today, we announce one of our innovative new ideas for improving OUR children’s education while reducing its cost by tens of millions of dollars. We propose physical education for every high school student every semester. The total cost for a class of 30 students per month including facilities would be $300. Under our current system the cost would be $13,800 per month per 30 students with an additional $56 million for facilities in Clark County alone.

More and more, our students are placed in situations where inappropriate handling of guns has led to accidental shootings. We need safe and effective gun safety education which reduce accidental shootings to near zero. We have already proposed a Bill Draft Request that would provide free gun safety courses to all our children by certified gun safety instructors.

We must reduce our spending on administration and start spending our money in the classroom.
